Islands
Charismatic Tom works as a tennis instructor at a beautiful all-inclusive resort on the outskirts of the island. His classes are always full and he is never short of women either. Tom is well known on the island and is always there for everyone, but he never lets anyone get close. At night, he goes out, only to wake up the next morning hungover on a beach bed and then rush to the tennis court. So Tom's days flow together like a blur, until the Maguire family checks into the resort. When Anne requests tennis lessons for her infant son Anton, she and Tom seem to know each other vaguely. Tom befriends the family, but also becomes involved in the problems at play between Anne and her husband Dave. After a night out, Dave goes missing and, to Tom's surprise, Anne does not seem at all sad about it. Islands is an intense and brooding psychological thriller from German director Jan-Ole Gerster. Oh Boy (2012) with Tom Schilling was his successful debut feature and Gerster's second film Lara (2019) has also received several awards. In ominous Islands, nothing is what it seems and Gerster shows that you cannot run away from your problems, even on holiday. Starring Sam Riley (Control, Firebrand), Stacy Martin (The Brutalist) and Jack Farthing (Spencer, The Lost Daughter). Islands had its world premiere at this year's Berlinale and won the award for Best Film Score at the German Film Awards.
