Synopsis
Claire Denis' feature film debut subtly depicts colonial relations in French governed Cameroon. France, a young white woman, reminisces about her upbringing surrounded by arrogant colonials and Protée, the talented, attractive, African house servant.
7-year-old France's life is small and orderly: her father is a district governor in Cameroon and is often away from home; her mother is a devastatingly beautiful young woman languidly pining away in their colonial villa, whose eye is drawn to the attractions of Black Protée, who is efficiently running the household in the governor's absence.
