Synopsis
In the much-lauded 'Beau travail' the broken sergeant Galoup looks back on his tumultuous time in the Foreign Legion from his home in Marseille. The sensual, trance-inducing images shot by camera woman Agnès Godard are accompanied by a bizarre, yet compelling mix of opera-like sounds, disco and old legionnaires' songs.
In so doing, Denis and Godard capture the military and male codes of honour, the legacy of colonialism, destructive jealousy and repressed desire in mesmerising images that eventually explode into one of the most surprising and unforgettable endings in modern film history. Denis gives a delectable twist to Herman Melville's Billy Budd.
