Blast Off
1 : Blast Off
In the premiere of Project Runway, the competition begins with some twists right out of the airport gate. With luggage still in tow, the designers are greeted at the iconic TWA Hotel at JFK airport ready to take flight with their first challenge: to create an innovative look inspired by humanity’s continued push into space exploration. In a Runway first, these unfamiliar designers have to pair up and collaborate to make cohesive pieces that blow away the judges or they are out. Fans will also get a chance to own a piece of the designer creations when they vote on the outfits they like best.
Cats of the Urban Jungle
2 : Cats of the Urban Jungle

Sleigh the Runway
3 : Sleigh the Runway
The designers are awakened by a surprise visitor who may or may not have arrived by chimney. Tis the season for holiday parties and the designers will be challenged to show their sense of spirit in the perfect party dress. They quickly learn that this isn’t a conventional holiday affair… it’s the unconventional materials challenge! Channeling their own holiday memories, the designers have two days to transform a winter wonderland into a wearable wonder, and then it’s up to the judges to decide who’s been naughty or nice.
The Ultimate Upcycle
4 : The Ultimate Upcycle
Mega-stylist to the stars, Karla Welch is here to guest-mentor the designers and she’s got a job for them – dress her client: the one and only Karlie Kloss! Karla’s got a twist though, the materials used to design the look will be donated clothing from a local Goodwill, making this Project Runway’s first upcycling challenge. The designers will need to be resourceful, sustainable, and fast because it’s also their first one day challenge. One designer’s dreams will come true with the chance to dress a supermodel while another will be all out of second chances in this second-hand challenge.
She's Sew Unusual
5 : She's Sew Unusual
The iconic Cyndi Lauper is both inspiration and guest judge for this totally tubular team challenge. Split into two teams, the designers must create cohesive mini-collections. They need to collaborate to pay homage to Cyndi’s '80s fashion trailblazing that brought underground punk into the pop culture while still giving the looks a totally awesome modern take. Sounds pretty straight forward until Christian throws out a mid-challenge twist that changes everything.
There Is Only One You
6 : There Is Only One You
In this week’s challenge, the designers are given a chance to think about their family history and channel those stories and emotions into a look of their choosing. Sheer Genius
8 : Sheer Genius
The designers realize that the challenges only get harder the longer they survive the competition when they’re faced with the hardest yet: a one-day challenge using some of the toughest textiles: sexy, sheer fabrics. As the challenges get more challenging, the competition heats up and just staying in the game becomes more and more difficult for several designers who are reaching their personal limits and question their ability to make it to the end.
Suit Yourself
9 : Suit Yourself
This week’s challenge is all about turning a timeless classic on its head: The Tuxedo. Inspired by recent fashion moments like their mentor Christian Siriano’s groundbreaking Oscar look for Billy Porter, the designers will each need to find their own way to take the tuxedo into the future with a mix of male, female, and non-binary models. A perfectly tailored suit is nearly impossible without help, so the designers get a surprise second set of hands to help out.
Live and Let Tie Dye
10 : Live and Let Tie Dye
Tie dye is back in a big way and the designers will need to create their own textiles to elevate the trend from casual to couture. The designers go a bit mad working into the wee hours trying to perfect their techniques and complete their high end looks.
Olympic Game Plan
11 : Olympic Game Plan
Designing for a client can be tough, especially when your client is a star athlete with high expectations. In this challenge, designers are paired up with a real athlete who will be competing to be in the 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic games. The designers need to make them their dream outfit for a victory night celebration, using all of their specialty skills to make the perfect proportions for their clients unique bodies, all while keeping their own point of view amongst a tough client challenge.
The Height of Avant Garde Fashion
12 : The Height of Avant Garde Fashion
With only one challenge left to make it to New York Fashion Week, the remaining designers must think big to create an avant-garde look that is anything but ordinary. In a fashion first, the runway begins with a season long retrospective, outside and 16 stories high, at New York City’s dramatic, Vessel. The stakes are as high as the runway, because in fashion one day you’re in, and in this challenge, two will be out.

Returning as judges were supermodel Heidi Klum; fashion designer Michael Kors; and Marie Claire fashion director, Nina Garcia. Tim Gunn returned as the workroom mentor to the aspiring designers. Designer Gretchen Jones was the season's winner. The decision was met with controversy; both Gunn and Klum have spoken out against Jones' victory, condemning Kors and Garcia's decision to award her the win, believing instead that Mondo Guerra was the worthier contender. Due to Jones' negative portrayal throughout the series many home viewers also disagreed with the decision to award her the win, believing her design aesthetics and her on-screen demeanour left her unworthy of the title of Project Runway Winner. April Johnson, Michael Costello and Mondo Guerra later appeared in Project Runway: All Stars in 2012, with April receiving 10th Place, Michael 3rd, and Mondo winning the competition. Peach Carr, Carlos Casanova and Ivy Higa in the same year, competed in the second season of the All Stars edition placing 13th, 7th and 5th respectively. 8

Season 3 brought in a new set of sponsors, notably Macy's replacing Banana Republic. NBC re-aired the first two episodes of Project Runway 3 five days after their original Bravo airings. The third season also introduced live viewer poll questions. During the second half-hour of the first airing of each episode, Bravo posed a question to viewers pertaining to the current episode. Viewers could answer through the BravoTV.com website or through cell phone text message. The winner, Jeffrey Sebelia, received a spread in Elle magazine, a mentorship with INC Design, a year of representation by Designers Management Agency, a 2007 Saturn Sky Roadster, and $100,000 to start a clothing line. Kayne Gillaspie and Uli Herzner later competed in the second season of the All Stars edition with Kayne placing 9th, and Uli making it yet again, to the finals. 3

Season 1 (2004)

11  |  : 12/01/2004 Project Runway Season 1 was the first season of Project Runway, Bravo's reality competition show for fashion designers. The season received critical acclaim including an Emmy nomination for outstanding competitive reality series. Growth in audience popularity was also dramatic from its debut to the season finale, making it a sleeper hit. Project Runway gave Bravo one of its most successful series since Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. The winning designer of the first season was Pennsylvania-based designer Jay McCarroll. As his prize for winning the competition among 12 designers, McCarroll won $100,000, a mentorship with Banana Republic to aid in developing his own fashion label, and a feature of his work in the American edition of ELLE magazine. The winning model of the first season, selected by McCarroll, was Julia Beynon. McCaroll later turned down both the $100,000 and the mentorship with Banana Republic, stating that the prizes came with too much contractual baggage. Austin Scarlett later appeared in Project Runway: All Stars in 2012, where he finished runner-up. Wendy Pepper, in the same year, competed in the second season of the All Stars edition placing 12th out of 13. 1

1 : Innovation
The 14 hopefuls all meet up in New York and are given their first assignment: Innovation. Taken to a place where they are said to get their materials, the designers are shocked to see it is a grocery store. Back in the workroom, Austin Scarlett is confused about how to make a dress out of his many corn husks. Mario Cadenas on the other hand quickly makes a dress out of a shower curtain and is finished in 10 minutes. At judging, Austin's creativity pays off as he is the winner of the competition, and Daniel Franco is the first designer sent home.
Vision
2 : Vision
Another day begins, and the designers are to design a dress that represents 'Envy'. As they finish, the designers are surprisedly told that their dresses will be put for sale in a private auction, with whomever gets the most bids winning the challenge. At the runway, it is revealed Kara Saun's design earned the most bids, pocketing over $400. As the designers are asked to explain their idea, the judges are not impressed with Mario's simplicity and send him home.
Commercial Appeal
3 : Commercial Appeal
The designers finally have to decide something actually wearable. For this challenge, the designers must create a party dress that could appeal to Banana Republic's customers. The winner, instead of being granted immunity, will have their dress marketed and sold at select Banana Republic stores. After two horrible weeks with dresses failing to impress the judges, Wendy Pepper finally comes through with a simple black dress with matching capulet and purse. Wendy is thrilled at the prospect of seeing her design for sale in stores.
Collaboration
4 : Collaboration
Rock singer Sarah Hudson makes a special appearance. All of the designers show them their prospective Rock N' Roll designs and Sarah picks the three whose designs she liked best: Jay, Kevin, and Austin's. Those three are the team leaders and they have to pick two others to be on their team and as a group, they will work on the group leader's design. At judging, Jay's group is safe and Heidi shocks the remaining designers asking them who they think in their group should be 'out'. Austin breaks down crying before saying Vanessa should be out. Vanessa herself admits she should be out as well. Before elimination, Sarah picks Kevin's design as the winner making him safe from elimination the next week. After deliberation, the judges decide to send home Vanessa because she admitted to them she was a weak link.
5 : "Model" Clients
The designers learn that their selected model will be their client, and they must design a wedding dress of their model's dreams. At evaluation, the judges feel as though even Austin's dress was horrendous and not at all like a wedding dress, Nora's was too plain and not original.
Making a Splash
6 : Making a Splash
This next assignment goes a direction not yet seen in this competition. The designers will be designing swimsuits that are functional enough to swim in the pool, yet sophisticated enough to wear to a fashion-industry party.
Design a Collection
7 : Design a Collection
As one group, the designers will create a collection, one carrying the theme "the year 2055”. One designer is to lead, taking responsibility for the overall vision, while each designer will sketch and create an outfit of his or her own for the line.
Postal Uniform Challenge
8 : Postal Uniform Challenge
Instead of another assignment, Heidi gives the five finalists each brown paper packages containing the key to their next challenge, which they are not allowed to open until the next morning.
Design for the Red Carpet
9 : Design for the Red Carpet
