Jake Johnson (born May 20, 1978), also billed as Jake M. Johnson, is an American actor and comedian, most known for playing Nick Miller in the Fox comedy series New Girl opposite Zooey Deschanel. Johnson also co-starred in the 2009 film Paper Heart. 
 
Johnson was born in Evanston, Illinois, a northern suburb of Chicago, Illinois, and was raised by his single mother, an artist who made stained glass windows. Johnson grew up in Evanston, Winnetka, Lincoln Park, and Rogers Park, and graduated from New Trier High School. Johnson attended the University of Iowa for two years before moving to New York for creative writing at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and eventually Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. He has also frequently performed in various comedy shows at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York and Los Angeles for many years. Johnson and Eric Edelstein have also performed as a comedy duo, their sketch show "This Is My Friend" was regularly featured at The Second City in Los Angeles. In 2006, Johnson and Edelstein worked with executive producers Jason Ritter and Simon Helberg to create a half-hour improvised pilot for television based on their sketch show. 
 
Johnson has appeared in numerous television and film roles throughout 2006-2010, including guest roles on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Lie To Me and FlashForward. In 2010, Steel Train featured Johnson in their "Turnpike Ghost" music video as the show host Al Scalzo. 
 
In 2011, he starred in the romantic-comedy film No Strings Attached alongside Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher. In 2011, he landed a starring role in the Fox comedy series New Girl, which was one of eight honorees in the "Most Exciting New Series" category at the Critics' Choice Television Awards, voted by journalists who had seen the pilots. The series premiered to a strong audience figure of 10.28 million and to a positive critical reception. 
 
He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Erin Payne, an artist. Johnson enjoys basketball and tennis, being a member of both the Sunday Men's Basketball League and the Interstate 5 Tennis Association. He is partly of Irish descent.
