Portia de Rossi was born Amanda Lee Rogers in Geelong, Australia. She took the name Portia de Rossi at a young age. She picked Portia because she was a Shakespeare fan (Portia is a character in The Merchant of Venice) and De Rossi because she thought that an exotic Italian name would somehow suit her more than Amanda Rogers.
