In 1934 Stalin thought up an independent republic for communist Jews - not only soviet Jews, but communist Jews from all across the globe. Birobidzhan then was no more than a desolate and deserted marshy area near the Chinese border in Siberia. Who were the people who left for this Promised Land five years before the outbreak of WWII and fifteen years before the foundation of Israel? What became of them?
